Florida insurance answer

What is the difference between a BOP and a commercial package policy?

Reviewed by Anthony Nastase · Updated August 13, 2026 · 7 min read

Short answerA BOP bundles common property and liability coverage for eligible businesses using a standardized package. A commercial package policy is often more flexible for larger or more complex operations, locations and coverage needs.

What this means in practice

Commercial coverage should follow the company’s real operations, contracts, property, payroll, revenue, vehicles and loss history. A generic package can leave gaps when the business changes or performs work outside the description on the policy.

Florida specific considerations

Florida businesses may need general liability, commercial property, business income, commercial auto, workers compensation, professional liability, cyber, flood or other specialized coverage. These protections are not automatically interchangeable.

Practical example

A contractor that uses employee vehicles for errands may need hired and non-owned auto protection even when the company owns no vehicles.

Common mistakes

  • Describing operations too narrowly
  • Treating a certificate as proof that every contract requirement is covered
  • Leaving vehicles, locations or subsidiaries off the policy
  • Assuming commercial property includes flood

What should you do next?

Collect current policies, loss runs, contracts, payroll and revenue, property values, vehicle and driver schedules, and a clear description of operations for an agent review.
